Be Enchanted, Visit Somerset – England

One of the larger English counties and yet far from the most densely populated, Somerset has so many surprises waiting to be unwrapped by the inquisitive visitor. Even those who live here can be taken back to discover some of its gems; wildflower meadows, beach waterfalls, ancient wells, unique carvings and underground reservoirs. Then there are the well-known landmarks which, despite seeming all too familiar, have secrets of their own.

Think of Somerset and what comes to mind – stunning views across open countryside, sandy beaches, superb strawberries, Cheddar cheese and cider? World-wide, our county is famous for its Glastonbury Festival, illuminated carnivals, Mulberry handbags and Arthurian Legends. There is more! Much more.

What Somerset in the UK has to offer!

Somerset is a historic land of unique and stunning scenery that combines over 60 miles of varied natural coastline with inland beauty that includes four areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (The Quantock Hills, The Blackdown HillsThe Mendip Hills and Cranborne Chase) and Exmoor National Park.

Major road and rail transport networks weave through the county making it easily accessible from all parts of the UK, for instance just two hours via motorway from London and Birmingham and 80 minutes by rail,  supported by GWR trains from London Paddington.

Somerset boasts two famous cities, Bath and Wells, that both reflect civilization stretching back thousands of years. Georgian Bath has world-famous architecture and culture attractions including the Jane Austen Centre, reflecting part of one of the most famous authors in the world and her time in Bath in Somerset.  This sits together with the world-renowned Roman Baths, Royal Crescent and Costume Museum. Wells is the UK’s smallest Medieval City whose cathedral and Bishop’s Palace are 800 years old.

The countryside has many historical sites, gardens, and buildings, including Dunster CastleMontacute House and Barrington Court. Visiting these will take you back in history more than 500 years, having been in recent times the location of the TV series Wolf Hall, set in the time of King Henry VIII. Dunster Castle provides a majestic view of the West Somerset Steam Railway, the longest heritage railway in the UK, which is a remarkable heritage experience spanning 22 miles long.

Glastonbury Abbey, (Officially recorded as to where the earliest Christian settlers originated anywhere in Europe) and the nearby Tor are huge attractions, the former with its legend of King Arthur and Joseph of Arimathea. Nearby in Shepton Mallet is Kilver Court, a designer brand outlet shopping village and the original home of Mulberry.

There is so much to sample in Somerset, reputed by some archaeologists as possibly the oldest county in the UK.
